Cabo San Lucas, also known as Cabo, is a vacation destination located on the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. Many of the tourists that come here live in the southwestern United States. This area is full of hotels, resorts and other types of lodging. Many restaurants and recreational activities are available in Cabo as well.
Although, many people come here for many other reasons besides the fishing, Cabo is very popular among fishermen. You may heard of this area because of its excellent marlin fishing. There are numerous billfish tournaments here throughout the year and some of these fishing tournaments have extremely high payouts with winners taking home well over $100,000. Not too bad for winning a fishing tournament, huh?
For the average angler coming here on a vacation, you are going to be looking at hiring a fishing charter if you plan on having some success. There are plenty of fishing charters here and many of them are very skilled with all of the modern gear needed to troll for some enormous offshore species. Some of the fish you can expect to catch offshore are tuna, marlin, mackerel, dorado and wahoo. These trips will mostly consist of trolling live bait rigs and plan on fighting these fish strapped into a fighting chair because they can be very big.
Some of the fishing charters do offer some inshore fishing for mackerel, snapper, grouper, jack crevalle and other species. Many of the charters do offer some light tackle and even fly fishing trips. Fly fishermen have a blast here because charters give them the option of fishing for billfish on the fly. Fly fishermen catch other species as well such as dorado, tuna and rooster fish. Fly fishing is a little different here compared to some of the other fishing trips that most saltwater fly fishermen plan. Most saltwater fly fishing trips involve fishing the flats for bonefish, permit and tarpon.
